Question

Import Duty Calculator

Import duty is estimated by multiplying customs value by the base duty rate, then adding any additional tariff rate, tax or VAT, brokerage, handling, and other fees. TariffCatalog uses manual inputs so rates can be verified against official sources.

Official source notes and calculator assumptions should be reviewed before shipment, label purchase, invoice filing, or customs entry.

Formula / Criteria

Calculation logic

Total import cost = customs value + base duty + additional tariff + VAT or tax + brokerage + handling + other fees. The tax basis can be customs value only, customs value plus duty, or customs value plus duty plus additional tariff.

Example

Scenario

A $2,000 shipment with 6.5% base duty, 0% additional tariff, and $50 fees returns $130 duty and $2,180 estimated import cost before any destination-specific tax.

Source Note

Official check

Use official tariff databases to verify the base duty rate. Use the additional tariff field for Section 301-style scenarios when applicable.

Limitations

Filing check

This tool provides estimates and document preparation support only. It is not customs, tax, legal, broker, or freight forwarding advice. HS code candidates and duty estimates must be verified with official tariff databases or a licensed customs broker before filing.

FAQ

Common questions

How much import duty do I pay from China to USA?

It depends on HTS code, customs value, origin, and applicable additional tariffs. Use base duty plus additional tariff fields instead of assuming a universal rate.

Is my product subject to Section 301 tariff?

Check the HTS code and applicable USTR/USITC references. Use the additional tariff input when a verified product-and-origin-specific additional duty applies.

Does VAT apply to duty?

In many VAT systems, import VAT is calculated on customs value plus duty. Verify destination-specific rules.

What is customs value?

Customs value is the value used by customs to assess duty. It may be FOB, CIF, or another basis depending on destination rules.

Are estimates guaranteed?

No. They are planning estimates only.
